My central air conditioner has been dying all summer. I ordered the Honeywell HW4CEDAWW0 14,000 BTU compact portable air conditioner (AC) with dual hoses to tide me over while waiting for my central AC to be repaired. The August temps are in the 90's in Virginia and my house was sticky and humid. This Honeywell AC works great to cool and remove humidity in my room of about 700 square feet.
HOWEVER, I deducted two stars for two inexcusably frustrating DESIGN FLAWS (read on). First, the good part…
PROS
1. COOLS GREAT - The AC quickly cooled and removed humidity from my great room (living room / dining room / kitchen combo) of about 700 square feet. I set it to 65 when my room was 77; within an hour or two, the room felt great and the temp had dropped to 68 with low humidity. My house is 1500 square feet; I set this unit on high and it removed the humidity throughout my entire house that my dying central air conditioner could not. I ordered a dual-hose model because it cools better, using one hose for cool air intake and a second hose for hot air exhaust.
2. WELL-DESIGNED - The AC unit is sturdy and well designed; it rolls easily on casters. It has easy-to-understand controls and is made of quality materials (even the hoses).
3. QUIET - It's also very quiet at 51 decibels when running on the highest setting, making this the quietest portable AC I've come across. I sat 6 feet away from the AC all day and was not bothered by the sound.
CONS
1. DESIGN FLAW #1: WINDOW BRACKET DOESN'T FIT WITHOUT CUTTING. The design engineer must have been on vacation when the window bracket kit was designed. It's a terrible design that DOES NOT fit a standard 36" wide window (very common in America). You WILL NEED TO CUT THE PLASTIC WINDOW BRACKET TO FIT YOUR WINDOW if your window is 36" wide like mine. I had to shorten one of the window bracket panel adapters by cutting off about 2 inches. I used a reciprocating saw with a metal blade that also cuts PVC. If you don't have a reciprocating saw or circular saw, you MUST take this bracket to your hardware store to be cut. Are you kidding? This is a dealbreaker for many people. At this price point ($600), this unit SHOULD come with an adjustable window bracket that fits windows ranging from 24" - 48" wide WITHOUT CUTTING. If a $10 curtain rod is adjustable, why not a $600 portable AC?
2. DESIGN FLAW #2: NO WEATHERSEAL WAS INCLUDED. My portable AC (model HW4CEDAWW0) is an earlier version of the dual-hose model that DOES NOT include any window weatherseal (foam insulation pads and adhesive insulation tape). YOU WILL NEED TO BUY WINDOW WEATHERSEAL IF YOUR UNIT DOES NOT INCLUDE IT. I spent $20 extra to buy various kinds of adhesive and non-adhesive window weatherseal. I found that the grey foam typically used around a window air conditioner worked best to seal the large gaps around the window bracket. I used Frost King air conditioner weatherseal, which is a grey foam strip 1-1/4" wide x 1-1/4" thick x 42" long. I needed 3 packs for my 36" wide single-hung window and trimmed to fit. I chose non-adhesive foam so I can remove the window bracket when it rains.
TIP TO KEEP OUT BUGS AND RAIN: I exhausted the hoses through a window but left in the window screen to keep out bugs. To prevent water damage, I decided to remove the window bracket and close the window before I went out or if it rained. If you leave the window bracket installed, rain will definitely leak in the window unless the hose exhausts through a window that opens onto a covered porch protected from rain.
CONFUSING MODEL NUMBERS: There are two very similar model numbers: HW4CEDAWW0 and HW4CEDVWW0. I think the AC unit is the same, but the "A" in the model number was changed to a "V" to indicate that window weatherseal pieces are included with the "V" model. I was confused about which version I would receive, but my unit (model HW4CEDAWW0) DID NOT include any window weatherseal. The user manual on the Honeywellaircomfort.com site linked to my model HW4CEDAWW0 is not correct; it's for the later version (model HW4CEDVWW0) which DOES include the window weatherseal pieces.
BOTTOM LINE: If you are willing to work around the design flaws, this portable AC does a fantastic job of cooling and removing humidity well. But it doesn't earn 5 stars for the reasons cited above. You can do better, Honeywell.
