Portable Dehumidifier FAQs | Troubleshooting | How to's
General Info
As the name suggests, a portable dehumidifier works to reduce and eliminate humidity from musty basements or from any part of your home with high humidity. The portable dehumidifier sits nicely on sturdy wheels and can be easily moved from room to room. It is designed to work in temperatures between 41°F (5°C) and 89°F (32°C).
To avoid mildew, mold or bacteria growth in the dehumidifier water tank, it is important to empty condensation water weekly and do not let water sit for long periods of time. You can add a small amount of vinegar to a full bucket of water and let it sit overnight. Discard the vinegar water after 24 hours and use a clean towel or soft sponge to gently scrub the inside of the tank and then rinse clean and re-install the tank back onto the dehumidifier.
Also, be sure to follow best maintenance practices by removing the water tank and letting it fully dry before storing or leaving it un-used at the end of the season to prevent mildew growth.
A portable dehumidifier is easy to set up and does not require any installation. Just remember to close all windows and doors in order for the unit to successfully work as required. It is important that the dehumidifieris in an enclosed area at all times during operation.
A compressor dehumidifier works by using condensation to extract water from the atmosphere. The dehumidifier draws in warm, humid air, which then passes over a refrigerated coil. When warm air passes over the coil, moisture is removed from the air via condensation.
A desiccant dehumidifier uses adsorption, a process in which liquid molecules adhere to a surface. Humid air is drawn into the dehumidifier and passed over a desiccant wheel containing silica gel, which adsorbs excess humidity. The dehumidifier then outputs dry, warm air.
After removing the filter and cleaning it per the manual’s instructions, you must press the filter button located on the display screen for the light to disappear.
You must continuously press the (-) button on the display below 30% until CO is displayed on the screen. Continuous mode refers to the unit continuously running. This is the lowest setting on the dehumidifier. It will force the fan and compressor to continuously run.
There is a 5% rule regarding a built-in humidistat versus a hygrometer.
⦁ If the readings on the hygrometer and the humidistat are within about 5%-8% of each other, your dehumidifier’s humidity sensor is working properly.
It’s important to place the hygrometer by the dehumidifier’s humidistat (normally located on the coils by the filter) for the most accurate reading.
If you have a dehumidifier model with a splash guard:
⦁ Make sure the splash guard is properly positioned and clipped into the tank.
⦁ To establish whether the splash guard is causing the leak, remove the splash guard and operate the unit without it for about 2 hours. If the unit does not leak, the splash guard is causing the leak.
Check to ensure that the foam float inside the water tank is positioned correctly, lying level with the top edge of the water tank.
Inspect the water tank for any possible cracks or leaks.
Before using the dehumidifier, place it upright for a minimum of 1 hour to allow the refrigerant to stabilize.
Dehumidifiers are designed to operate in environments between 41°F (5°C) and 89°F (32°C).
Do not use an extension cord with the dehumidifier. Using an extension cord will void the manufacturer’s warranty.
The auto drain pump and auto drain cap are only for models TP50PWKNN/TP70PWKN/ TP70PWK with Built-in Drain Pump.
Can I purchase these parts if I have a non-pump model?
⦁ No, the parts are only compatible with models TP50PWKNN/TP70PWKN /TP70PWK that already have a built-in pump.
One difference between the TP Series and DH Series is the tank full volume.
⦁ TP30WKN/TP30AWKN/TP50AWKN/TP50WKN: 7 pints/3.3 L
⦁ TP70WKN/TP70AWKN/TP70PWKN: 14 pints/6.6 L
⦁ DH45WKN/DH45PWKN/DH70WKN/DH70PWKN: 14.4 pints/6.8 L
Another difference between the TP Series and DH Series is the drain hose.
⦁ The TP30WKN/TP30AWKN/TP50AWKN/TP50WKN/TP70WKN/TP70AWKN/TP70PWKN come with a 3 ft. drain hose that cannot be extended or replaced with a garden hose.
⦁ The DH45WKN/DH45PWKN/DH70WKN/DH70PWKN do not come with a hose included but do have a fitting that can be used with a standard-size garden hose.
Another difference between the TP Series and DH Series is the noise level (dBA).
⦁ TP30WKN/TP30AWKN: 49.5
⦁ TP50WKN/TP50AWKN: 50
⦁ TP70WKN/TP70AWKN/TP70PWKN: 51
⦁ DH45WKN/DH45PWKN: 53
⦁ DH70WKN/DH70PWKN: 55
Dehumidifier models TP70PWKN and DH70PWKN have built-in water pumps.
It is recommended to clean the filter every two weeks. You can wash it with water, but it is important to allow the filter to dry before replacing it in the unit. You can also use a vacuum to clean the filter. When you are finished with the dehumidifier for the season, be sure to empty any water that has been collected in the water bin. Disconnect the hose if you used one, and make sure you replace the drain cap and rubber stopper back into the drain outlet. Make sure you store the unit in a cool place away from sunlight.
The Sleep Mode on the TP Series Dehumidifiers dims the light on the control panel and mirage display for better comfort when needed. However, the light does not completely switch off in order to keep settings visible through out operation.
The TP Series Dehumidifiers (TP30WKN/TP50WKN/TP70WKN/TP30AWKN/TP50AWKN/TP70AWKN) do come packaged with a drain tube for continuous drainage. You can attach a standard garden hose for continuous drainage, but because the continuous drainage feature relies on gravity to pull the water condensation through the hose, it cannot be too long, or the water may collect inside the hose or return to the unit. This is standard for most gravity drain dehumidifiers. Therefore, if the hose is longer than about 1 meter, it must be positioned vertically downward below the height of the dehumidifier. You can also buy the Honeywell TP70PWK with Built-in Drain Pump, which would allow for another 5 meters as the pump helps to push the water out.
You might have noticed two different listed pint capacities for your dehumidifier. This is because dehumidifiers are now tested under new conditions that result in a reduction of their capacity rating. Due to these new Department of Energy (DOE) testing methods, a dehumidifier’s 2019 DOE capacity rating will be lower than its 2012 DOE capacity rating. However, no changes have been made to the units themselves, only to the method of testing. Actual dehumidifier performance has not changed.
Humidity is the measurement of water vapor in the air. Relative humidity is measured as a percentage. Generally, 30-50% is the ideal humidity level for most homes. You can use a humidity monitor, or hygrometer, to check the humidity levels around you.
Troubleshooting
It is normal for the fan to run for an extra 3-5 minutes after the dehumidifier has reached target humidity. When the compressor turns off (because it reached target humidity), the dehumidifier fan should continue to run for 3-5 minutes to cool the compressor.
There is also a 5%-8% rule regarding a built-in humidistat versus a hygrometer. If the readings on the hygrometer and the humidistat are within about 5%-8% of each other, your dehumidifier’s humidity sensor is working properly.
To troubleshoot this issue further, please answer the below questions:
- Is the compressor turning off at the desired humidity %?
- Is it just the Fan running, and does it turn off after about 5-8 minutes?
- Is the dehumidifier accidentally set to CO (Continuous mode)? If it is, it will keep running continuously even after it reaches your desired temperature.
- To test if the fan turns off, you can raise the desired humidity 15% higher than what the room humidity is showing and wait 5-10 minutes to see if the dehumidifier turns off. Can you try this and let me know the outcome?
No electricity.
⦁ Check for power.
The power cord is not properly plugged in.
⦁ Remove and reconnect the power cord.
The safety switch is activated on the electrical plug.
⦁ Reset the safety switch and wait for 3 minutes to pass. Contact Customer Support if the problem persists.
The water tank is not in the correct position.
⦁ Position the water tank correctly into the unit. The unit will not operate until the water tank is securely in place.
The humidity level setting is too high.
⦁ Decrease the humidity level setting.
A door or window is open, letting in new moisture.
⦁ Make sure all windows or doors to the outside are closed and tightly sealed.
There are other sources of humidity in the room (e.g. boiling water in pot, washer/dryer, water boiler/water heater).
⦁ Switch on the dehumidifier when these sources are not present.
The temperature in the room is too low.
⦁ The dehumidifier is designed to operate between 41°F (5°C) and 89°F (32°C). Moisture removal is greatly reduced if room temperatures exceed this temperature range.
The dust filter is dirty/ blocked.
⦁ Clean the dust filter.
Air outlet or intake is blocked.
⦁ Remove blockage.
The area to be dehumidified is too large.
⦁ The capacity of your dehumidifier may not be adequate for the room it is used in. It is recommended to add an extra dehumidifier for large areas.
A door or window is open, letting in new moisture.
⦁ Make sure all windows or doors to the outside are closed and tightly sealed.
The fan is working.
⦁ Wind from the fan can create sounds during operation. This is normal.
The compressor is working.
⦁ There is a sound when the compressor turns on. The compressor will activate periodically based on humidity settings. This is normal.
If the unit is making grinding noises after unpacking, please contact the retailer for a return or exchange. Loud grinding noises can indicate internal damage caused by improper handling.
The purpose of the top air vent is to distribute air into the room.
The temperature of the air from the vent depends on the room environment and other factors. It is normal for this to fluctuate. No action is required.
To troubleshoot the continuous drain connection on your Honeywell Dehumidifier, please try the following steps:
- Water Tank needs to be filled about 50% before continuous draining is activated. It's important to note that for the water to be drained from the tank, the water level must be above halfway for the tube to activate and remove the water. Keep in mind that the water tank will always contain some water, as it needs to reach a specific level to trigger the drainage from the tube.
- Dehumidifier is Positioned on Uneven Ground: Some floors may have an uneven surface which may affect the continuous drainage function. Raise the front of the Dehumidifier ½ to 1 inch (1.27 cm to 2.54 cm) from the floor. See if the water condensation will drain out the back hose and not into the bucket.
- Loose Drain Tube/ Cap Connection: Remove and re-install the pump drain tube ensuring a secure fit.
- Drain Tube Blockage: Ensure the drain tube is not bent or twisted with kinks causing any blockage of water condensate flowing through it.
- Drain Tube is Dipped into Water: Check if the end of the drain tube where the water is being expelled, is not dipped into a puddle of water - The end of the drain tube should be clear and out of water to avoid water flowing back into unit.
If you're facing issues with frozen coils in your Honeywell dehumidifier, follow these steps to troubleshoot the problem:
- Check Drain Tube: Have you connected the drain outlet to a garden hose? If so, please remove the garden hose, re-install the original drain cap. Let the ice on the coils melt. When all melted, turn the dehumidifier ON at a target humidity of 35% and let the unit run for 5-6 hours to see if the ice returns or not.
- Check Airflow: Ensure there's adequate airflow around the appliance. Blocked vents or airflow paths can lead to condensation buildup and coil freezing. Maintain at least 17 inches of clearance around your dehumidifier, and remove any obstacles such as furniture or curtains blocking airflow.
- Check Drain Outlet: Check to see the drain outlet is clear of debris, dirt and grime. Use a straw or toothbrush to dig out any dirt and grime collected inside the drain hole.
- Clean Filters: Dirty or clogged air filters can impede airflow, causing coils to freeze. Refer to the user manual for instructions on how to clean or replace the filters regularly.
- Room Temperature: Verify that the room temperature isn't below freezing. Extremely low temperatures can contribute to coil freezing. Ensure the room is maintained at a suitable temperature for optimal dehumidifier operation.
The unit will not operate until the water tank is securely in place.
Position the water tank correctly in the unit.
If the water tank full indicator light on your Honeywell Dehumidifier keeps coming on and won't turn off, there could be a few reasons for this:
- Bucket Position: Ensure that the water collection bucket is properly seated in the dehumidifier. Sometimes, if it's not positioned correctly, the sensor might think the bucket is full when it's not.
- Bucket Sensor: The sensor that detects whether the bucket is full may be faulty or dirty. Clean the sensor area with a soft cloth and check for any debris that might be interfering with its function.
- Float Switch: The dehumidifier has a float switch that activates when the water level in the bucket reaches a certain height. If this switch is stuck or malfunctioning, it could cause the bucket full indicator to stay on. Check the float switch mechanism for any obstructions or damage.
Complete the following steps to troubleshoot the E3 Error code issue:
- Check the ambient room temperature is below 89oF (32oC). If not, reduce the room temperature or move the unit to a room with cooler temperatures for 24 hours and then turn ON again
- Movement of the dehumidifier may have caused the refrigerant to de-stabilize. Turn OFF and unplug the dehumidifier from power outlet for at least 24 hours, keeping it OFF in the upright position for the entire duration. Please avoid moving the unit.
- Re-plug after 24 hours and turn the unit ON and operate again.
a. Please contact the Customer Support center.
To troubleshoot the EH error code on your Honeywell dehumidifier, you can try the following steps:
- Reset the Unit: Turn off the dehumidifier, unplug it from the power source, and wait for 24 hours. Then, plug it back in and turn it on again to see if the error code clears after running for at least 1-2 hours.
- If you have a TP30** or TP50**, check the Humidistat Sensor: Inspect the sensor for any visible damage or debris that may be interfering with its operation. Clean the sensor with a soft cloth to remove dirt or dust. Re-install and try turning on the unit again.
a. This only appears for models TP50PN/ TP70P / TP70PN with Built-in Drain Pump.
b. Position the water tank correctly in the unit. The unit will not operate until the water tank is securely in place.
To troubleshoot the E5 error code on your Honeywell Dehumidifier with Pump, please try the following steps:
- Missing rubber washers in water pump drain cap: Check for the inner and outer rubber washers and confirm if missing - they may fall out when changing drain caps - check packaging/ water tank or around the floor area to see if the washer may have dropped out.
- Hot Room/ Reset the Unit: Turn off the dehumidifier, unplug it from the power source, and let the unit stand for 24 hours at room temperature below 89oF (32oC). Then, plug it back in and turn it on again to see if the error code clears.
- Check for Obstructions: Ensure that the dehumidifier's air intake and exhaust vents are not blocked by any obstacles. Restricted airflow can cause the internal temperature to rise, triggering the E5 error code.
- Incorrect Installation of the Drain Pump Tube or Wrong Drain Pump Tube Installed: Remove the Drain Tube and Cap and make sure it is the correct Auto Drain Pump cap and tube being connected to the drain outlet. It may be easy to mistakenly install the Continuous Water Drain Tube and Cap which does not have the pump function.
- Loose Drain Pump Tube/ Cap Connection: Remove and re-install the pump drain tube ensuring a secure fit.
- Drain Tube Blockage: Ensure the drain tube is not bent or twisted with kinks causing any blockage of water condensate flowing through it.
- Filter Screen at the top of the Tank is Clogged with Dirt: Remove the water tank and locate filter screen where the pump rod is located. Clean surface and reinstall.
- Missing rubber washers in water pump drain cap: Check for rubber washers and confirm if missing

These are pairing codes for TP Series model TP70AWKN.
Press the timer button 6 times and the codes will disappear.
The "SA" code means the unit is taking a rest. It will shut off for one hour after running for 24 hours to take a break. It should turn back ON after about one hour of resting.
- Check that the Direct Drain Cap is removed and that the Auto Drain Pump Cap and Auto Drain Pump Tube are installed properly. If the drain plug is installed, there is nowhere for water to drain out, and the E5 Error Code will display.
- Check that you are using the original Honeywell Auto Drain Pump Tube and not an alternative. The Honeywell Auto Drain Pump Tube that comes with the product is engineered for the pump model to allow consistent water flow up to 5 meters. The diameter and length are determined scientifically. The error code may occur when water is not dispensing properly.
- Check that the Auto Drain Pump Cap is securely on the Direct Drain outlet.
- Make sure the Auto Drain Tube is not blocked or bent.
- Make sure the filter screen on the pump is not obstructed or clogged with dirt.
- Ensure the Auto Drain Pump Cap has a washer at its center.
The TP70PWKN Honeywell Dehumidifier with Built-in Drain Pump will not automatically restart after a power outage to prevent leakage in case the drain tube was disconnected during power failure. The Auto Drain Pump Mode button must be manually reactivated in the event of a power outage.
There might be a few things that can cause the dehumidifier to keep running even when the water tank is full. Please try the below troubleshooting steps:
- Check Water Tank Position: Ensure that the water tank is correctly seated in its place. If the tank is not properly aligned or inserted, it may not trigger the auto-shutoff mechanism when full.
- Inspect Float Switch: Many dehumidifiers are equipped with a float switch that signals the unit to shut off when the water tank is full. Inspect the float switch to ensure it moves freely and isn't stuck in the "down" position. Clean the float switch and surrounding area to remove any debris that may be obstructing its movement.
- Clean or Replace Air Filter: A dirty or clogged air filter can obstruct airflow, causing the dehumidifier to run continuously in an attempt to reach the desired humidity level. Check the air filter and clean or replace it if necessary.
- Check Drainage Hose: If your dehumidifier is equipped with a continuous drainage option, make sure the drainage hose is properly connected and not blocked. If the drainage hose is clogged or kinked, it may prevent water from draining properly, causing the unit to keep running even with a full tank.
To troubleshoot the pump connection on your Honeywell Dehumidifier with Pump, please try the following steps:
- Set Up Instructions: Make sure you have activated the Pump button on the control panel. See manual here. Water Tank needs to be filled about 50% before pump is activated. It's important to note that for the water to be drained from the tank, the water level must be above halfway for the pump to activate and remove the water. Keep in mind that the water tank will always contain some water, as it needs to reach a specific level to trigger the pump.
- Tank Full Light: If the tank is full and the "full tank" light is on, make sure you are using the provided 16ft hose with the unit.
- Missing rubber washers in water pump drain cap: Check for rubber washers and confirm if missing
Please try the below troubleshooting steps to attempt to identify the source of the leakage:
- Water Float- There is a Foam Float inside the water tank that senses the water level to automatically stop dehumidification when the water tank is full. Make sure the Foam Float is positioned correctly inside the water tank by ensuring it lies level with the top edge of the water tank.
- Faulty Seals or Cracks- The seals around the water tank or the hose connection might be damaged or not properly sealed, allowing water to leak out. Can you check to see if you see any loose seals or cracks in the tank or drain tube?
- Condensation- Sometimes, condensation can form on the coils or other parts of the dehumidifier, leading to water dripping onto the floor. Can you check if there is water dripping from the coils?
- Splash Guard- The splash guard sits on the top part of the water tank. Ensure that the splash guard is properly clipped in. If not clicked in properly, the water will slide off the splash guard and leak below the tank. You may remove the splash guard and run the unit without the splash guard if it is causing leakage.
Power Button: Standby Mode vs Normal Mode
If the display screen shows TWO dashes, it indicates that it is in a Standby Mode.
The unit may be set to a standby mode or normal mode. When the unit is in stand-by mode, it does not turn on or off with 1 press.
If the Display Screen shows 2 dashes (no numbers) and does not start with one press of the Power button, or, if the power button is not working to turn ON or OFF with one press of the power button, the unit may be in stand-by mode.
To cancel stand-by mode, press the power button 5 times to exit stand-by mode to turn ON or OFF the dehumidifier.
How To's
When the water tank reaches capacity, the unit will shut off until it is emptied. There is also the option to attach a garden hose to redirect drainage and allow the dehumidifier to run without interruption. If you choose to attach a hose, you will need to ensure that the hose is free of kinks and that it drains into a reliable receptable, like a sink.
Please contact us if you have any inquiries or experience difficulties with your product.
To set up your dehumidifier for continuous water drainage, locate the drain outlet at the back of the unit. Next, unscrew and remove the drain cap. Then, screw the continuous water drain tube onto the direct drain outlet.
Once you have attached the drain hose to your dehumidifier, position the other end of the tube over a sink or drain, making sure the tube is secure. The tube should be directed downward as gravity is required to pull the water through the tube into the drain. Ensure the tube is not bent or kinked as this could stop the flow of water.
Dehumidifiers with automatic drain pumps allow you to remove condensation both vertically and horizontally up to 16 feet. Attach the drain pump tube to the direct drain outlet located on the back of the unit. Once the water in the water tank reaches a certain level, the water will automatically be pumped out of the tank to drain.
Watch the below video and follow the step-by-step process to set up your smart dehumidifier app for easy connectivity and to easily control settings through your mobile device.

It is recommended to use the drain tubes that come packaged with the dehumidifier, but if you must extend it, you can connect a standard garden hose to the drain outlet to extend the gravity drain function. You must cut it short to be no more than 5 feet, and the hose must not have any flat sections that can cause water to be stuck in the hose – which will cause malfunction of the unit. Ensure that the gravity drain outlet is raised above the drain hole or bucket to ensure the garden hose always runs downwards from the dehumidifier outlet to the drain hole.
